Teenagers Choose Your Destiny

Education

Literacy in America is the center of a longtime debate between different parts of the society, politicians, civil rights activists, parents, and schools. The complexity of the jobs in the market demanding a higher level of literacy is not a surprise; some jobs are critical to the growth of our economy. This era has witnessed a growing fierce competition from other nations that are investing heavily to strengthen their educational systems “As of 2011, America was the only free-market OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) country where the current generation was less well educated than the previous”  (the Council for Advancement of Adult Literacy, 2008). To overcome these challenges we need the contribution of the whole nation. The disparity in literacy of minorities is alarming; many reasons are behind such as Poverty, mediocre health coverage, and negative stimulating environment. These reasons are primarily causing failure of young African-Americans and Hispanics in school. Filling the gap in literacy between different classes of our society is the first step to push the educational system to become more performant. My advertisement is targeted to males of poor neighborhoods between the age of 12 and 16 because it is a sensitive period of transition from childhood to manhood. The adult behavior is directly impacted by this transitional period. The main idea is to persuade this group of the importance of learning. Making a relation between knowledge and the status of a man is another way to contradict with stereotypes associating manhood with drugs, sex, or alcohol. For the posting of this ad, I suggest a magazine for teenagers like Sports Illustrated considering the fact that many of this demographic is passionate about sports.

Bonus reflection

the rhetorical thinking is preventing me from being bamboozled because it allows me to improve techniques to analyze more efficiently  than before. looking to a text or image using the rhetorical strategies would prevent me from accepting fallacy general ideas regarding the origins or background. In addition, the rhetorical makes me checking the claims provided and how relevant are they.

Today I have learned from class about rhetorical context of advertising (audience , stance, genre, and media /design/form) . These terms I will use to analyze an ad for my next class and post it in a blog that professor want every student to have in order to  accomplish future assignments. The rhetorical thinking allows the reader to understand the meaning of a text .

At the group session, we picked this advertisement of a celebrity regarding its content that shows the muscular hand of Hulk with a bandage in his finger. In my point of view the purpose of this ad is to provoke in the audience, especially between mothers, the need of bandages as sort of necessary first aid making the connection between the bandages on a cartoon character with a healthy matter, so the advertiser is targeting younger users . The ad is probably a billboard without any words on it, making it completely visual.

This ad for Apple Company reminded me always of its founder Steve Jobs. This guy who was abandoned at an early age by his parents but still could overcome challenges and become successful. He could build a giant company of computers and mobiles that he changed the life of so many people around the world. Nowadays his IPhone is sold by millions monopolizing a large part of the market. The slogan “Think different” is reaching the audience in a different approach, connecting the apple product with exclusivity and non-conformity with what is existing in the market.

Applying ethos ,pathos ,and logos to an Ad :

jordan

This poster of Nike showing Michael Jordan performing a slum dunk is an example using ethos approach because the performer who is considered one of the greatest basketball player of all times is making the product likely to be trusted  by the audience . Because the targeted audience is mostly fans of the player, the ad  creates an emotional response of fans willing to buy the Nike sneakers, attempting to perform as Jordan does (pathos). The score in the right (Michael Jordan 1 : Isaac newton 0 ) is unreasonable because of the Newton’s gravity law .But its trying to convince the audience that the sneakers are capable to reach the maximum or highest level of performance in playing (logos).

Symbol and meaning :

The Asian symbol is a combination of two words. The first is Moon or month and the second is for life . It can refer to different meaning depending of the person. It could be a month that changed someone’s life either to the good or to the bad .the double meaning of the first character is not a surprise when we realize that eastern calendar is based according to the moon .I can also see that the sign for life is close to a plant making it significant to growth and prosperity.
